The Founding of White Clay Watershed Association |
The White Clay Watershed Association was founded over forty years ago to oppose a dam on the creek. It took many years, but eventually the dam project was abandoned, and the land acquired for the dam was turned into the nucleus of today's bi-state White Clay Creek Nature Preserve and Park. Since then the organization has broadened its focus to improving the environmental quality of the creek itself and to fostering local cultural and historic appreciation, both within the park and over the entire watershed.
The organization instigated an ultimately successful decade-long efforts by residents, landowners, local organizations and all the local governments within the watershed to petition Congress to have the White Clay Creek named as a National Wild & Scenic River.
Today, the Watershed Association works along with these same entities organized as the White Clay Creek & Scenic Management Committee on a variety of projects for the benefit of the watershed.
